SEFA - SYSTEM FOR ENVIRONMENTAL FLOW ANALYSIS

Objective: To demonstrate the capabilities of the SEFA (System for Environmental Flow Analysis) software to fisheries and aquatic biologists, conservation specialists, hydrologists, hydraulic engineers, federal, state and private business employees, environmental consultants, instream flow specialists, and other individuals involved with the assessment of environmental flows.
Background: The workshop will provide a hands-on guided tour through the new SEFA software, a comprehensive implementation of the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology. SEFA includes several hydraulic models and the capacity to import results of others, computation of hydrologic statistics, development of habitat suitability criteria, calculation of habitat indices, water temperature and dissolved oxygen modeling, sediment scour, transport, and deposition analysis, habitat time series, and several other features. The instructor is a certified fisheries scientist with 32 years experience using similar habitat modeling approaches, and is a co-developer of SEFA, along with Bob Milhous (PHABSIM) and Ian Jowett (RHYHABSIM).
Topics: Topics to be covered include an introduction to and demonstration of the full range of environmental flow assessment techniques, including physical habitat analysis, Tennant method, wetted area method, indicators of hydrologic alteration, percent exceedance, mechanistic models, and many others.
Take Aways: At the conclusion of the workshop, attendees will have developed awareness of potential approaches to instream flow analysis, recommendation, and evaluation, and know the elements required for a defensible environmental flow study, and the tools currently available.
Attendee Requirements: Attendees should bring their own notebook computer running any version of Microsoft Windows with administrator privileges in order to install the software. Some background in hydrology, hydraulics, and/or aquatic biology is desirable. SEFA software is proprietary to Aquatic Habitat Analysts, Inc. and will be a trial version with an expiration date 30 days after the workshop. Number of Students: The number of students will be limited to 40. Students will be enrolled in the order in which their registration is received. The course will be canceled if the number of students enrolled by June 3, 2013 is less than 6.
