Come visit the natural side of the Big Easy! While much has been said about the new flood reduction structures installed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, what is being done to maintain and enhance the natural green infrastructure of the region? Actually a lot!
Scientists from the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation will give a special tour by boat to see a restored cypress swamp and an accreting marsh at the site of a freshwater diversion. The field trip will include:

  1. A visit to the Bayou Bienvenue Wetland Triangle where we can view the infamous Lower Ninth Ward that was so devastated by Hurricane Katrina and a "ghost" cypress swamp that has been converted to an open-water brackish marsh due to levee construction and canal building. The area is currently planned for restoration back to a cypress swamp. The restored swamp will not only provide habitat, but critical protection for the Lower Ninth Ward
  2. Travel to the coast to see the Caernarvon Delta and Freshwater Diversion. There we will board boats to take us out to the cypress swamp and marsh. Coastal wetland scientists will be with us to describe the multiple issues and impacts and current restoration activities.
  3. If we have time, we will drive by the restored New Canal Lighthouse a symbol of renewal after Hurricane Katrina.

The coastal wetlands around New Orleans are affected by channelization, subsidence, nutrient starvation, oil pollution and flood surge. The tour will not only allow us to see some unique areas, but spur a bus load of discussion about what should and could be done with our coastal marshes that are impacted by direct human perturbation and sea level rise.

Schedule:

1:00 pm Depart hotel
1:30 pm 1st stop (future cypress swamp restoration) - Bayou Bienvenue Wetland Triangle Platform overlook into a ghost swamp adjacent to 9th ward flooded by Hurricane Katrina
3:00 pm 2nd stop Delacroix Corp boat launch - Caernarvon Diversion and Caernarvon Delta
6:30 pm Return to Hotel by 6:30 pm, if time allows we will drive by the New Canal Lighthouse

The cost for this trip is $55.00
