for Water Resources has come a long way! It has been 25 years since
the first AWRA GIS & Water Resources Conference and the very
term GIS doesnt mean the same thing as it did
back then. Data, tools, models and good cartography are still incredibly
important. Many of us still perform much of our geospatial work
on desktop computers. But we have moved well beyond desktops to
the cloud, to decision making and water-based applications that
are integral to ecology and society, well beyond floodplain mapping.
As GIS has changed, our biennial GIS and Water Resources conference
is changing too! This is the 10th in a series of conferences designed
around geospatial solutions to water resources-related problems.
Innovative water resources scientists, engineers, modelers, software
designers from public/government agencies, academic and private
sectors convene to exchange ideas, compare challenges and identify
solutions. If your aquatic research, management, and conservation
involves process models, geo-referenced field data, remote sensing,
or geostatistical models then this is the right conference for you.
Sandra Fox of the St. Johns River Water Management District chairs
this conference with her infectious enthusiasm for community-building
and real-world water resources problem-solving. Our two Technical
Program Co-Chairs, Dr. Dan Ames of Brigham Young University (BYU)
and Dr. Mike McManus of EPA, Office of Research and Development
have worked to broaden the conference focus to include ecosystem
as well as traditional water resources domains. This breadth is
reflected in the topical sessions organized by Dr. Norm Jones, of
BYU, which range from Communicating Science and Technology,
Putting NHDPlus to Work and Remote Sensing for
the Water Industry to Open Science and the Monitoring
of Aquatic Ecosystems and many more. The conference workshops
organized by Dr. Lilit Yeghiazarian of University of Cincinnati
also cover a range of topics including GIS Support for Hydrologic
& Hydraulic Modeling and Analyses and R and Spatial Data.
Our plenary speakers will showcase novel applications of geospatial
analyses of wetlands, the National Water Model, and city resilience
in the face of sea level rise and natural disasters. We are excited
by the program for the 10th AWRA Specialty Conference on GIS
& Water Resources: Geospatial Analysis of Watersheds: Ecological,
Hydrological, and Societal Responses.
