Joint Conference Luncheon
12:00 Noon – 1:30 PM

Conference Chair William A. Battaglin will officially close the Contaminants of Emerging Concern Conference II at this Joint Conference Luncheon.  The Riparian Ecosystems IV Conference Chair, Paul Mayer, will officially open our second conference at this luncheon.  Participants from both the conferences are invited to attend (it is included your registration fee). Two individuals will speak on topics intended to act as a bridge between the two conferences and their respective topics:  Dr. Tyrone Hayes and Dr. Sujay Kaushal.

Sujay Kaushal

Plenary Bridge Speaker:
Dr. Tyrone Hayes

University of California, Berkeley, CA
“The Scarlet Letter: Much Ado About Nothing”

Dr. Tyrone Hayes from University of California, Berkeley will be one of our “Bridge Speakers” on Wednesday afternoon at 12:00 during the Joint Conference Luncheon.  Dr. Hayes’s presentation will bridge the themes of the emerging contaminants and riparian conferences by highlighting the effects that contaminants can have on the biota that inhabit riparian systems. Dr. Hayes will present examples of how certain hormonally active pesticides can disrupt amphibian endocrine systems and how toxicology in general is addressing low-dose and nonmonotonic dose responses to environmental contaminants.

Sujay Kaushal

Plenary Bridge Speaker:
Dr. Sujay Kaushal
University of Maryland, College Park, MD
“Managing Contaminants along the Global Watershed Continuum:
 Riparian Zones to Rivers”

Dr. Sujay Kaushal will be the Plenary “Bridge Speaker” for the Riparian Ecosystems Conference.  Dr. Kaushal’s presentation is intended to bridge the emerging contaminants and riparian conferences by demonstrating the critical links between maintaining ecological function of riparian systems for their capacity for biogeochemical processing including nitrogen and other pollutants.  Dr. Kaushal will describe the watershed continuum of engineered and natural hydrologic flow paths that artificially expand drainage networks across human-dominated landscapes.  He demonstrates that hydrologic connectivity across landscapes influences downstream transport and transformation of contaminants across space and time.  Dr. Kaushal will present global examples of contaminant dynamics and management along the watershed continuum from riparian zones to rivers.

Riparian Ecosystems IV Reflections and Advancement

Jane Rowan, 2008 President of AWRA, will provide a summary of the conference. She will draw on what is presented in Denver to apply perspective to advances made since the AWRA 2008 Riparian Ecosystems Conference. Jane will highlight where current progress may lead us in riparian science and technology as we look forward to the next AWRA Riparian Conference.
