Summary:

Founded in 1992, the Center for Watershed Protection is an award-winning national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to protect, restore, and enhance our streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and bays. We create viable solutions and partnerships for responsible land and water management so that every community has clean water and healthy natural resources to sustain diverse life. Our vision is built upon our unique ability to advance, synthesize and widely disseminate watershed science by translating this knowledge into practical tools and techniques. Through our collaborative spirit and ability to integrate multiple disciplines, jurisdictions, and issues into a comprehensive watershed approach we endeavor to lead the nation in the development and implementation of the most effective stormwater and watershed management practices.

The Center’s headquarters is located in Ellicott City with field offices in Charlottesville, VA and Ithaca, NY. In 2011, the Center’s budget is $2.7 million dollars from a diverse client base of more than 30 agencies, foundations and firms across the country. Our primary audience includes local, state, and federal governmental agencies, environmental consulting firms, watershed organizations, and the general public. Oversight of the Center is provided by a multi-disciplinary management team, the Executive Director, and the Board of Directors.

The basis of our work stems from science and practical experience. As the nation's leading watershed and stormwater clearinghouse, the Center has extensive experience with the synthesis of research, working directly with local communities, delivering targeted training, and evaluating a community's watershed management capacity. Our numerous publications define and illustrate a systematic approach, and partnerships with communities around the country provide the background to develop and implement sound watershed management strategies and improve the integration of local watershed and stormwater programs.

The Center has worked directly with scores of governmental agencies, watershed organizations, and consultants to provide effective engineering, regulatory, and programmatic solutions to stormwater managers in geographically diverse settings. Our staff has extensive experience in delivering practical and useful products at a very reasonable cost. Our technical goal is to provide clear, condensed and scientifically defensible support that reflects our acute understanding of local conditions and specific needs of the practicing engineer, program manager, and regulatory official.
