What are your duties now? In addition to Business Development, I supervise a department comprised of engineers and scientists. I manage large water resources projects related to storm water management, flood control, wetlands and coastal engineering along the Great Lakes. I am also responsible for the advancement of water resources technology in the company.
What lead you to this position? It goes back to graduate school. I discussed with one of the professors what I wanted to do and also what I wanted to study. They didn't quite match. This professor encouraged me to restructure my graduate studies to match my career aspirations. I took his advice, I'm glad I did.
What do you like best about the position? I like the interaction with so many people the most. I work not only with and for people from a wide variety of technical disciplines within both engineering and science, but also a wide variety of people in non-technical disciplines.
What do you find most challenging about the position? Bringing a diverse range of opinions from people with dissimilar backgrounds to a consensus.
What advice do you have for students with interests in water resources? Regardless of what aspect of water resources you pursue or how much knowledge you attain, if you cannot communicate it you are of limited value. Verbal and written communication skills are crucial for a successful career in water resources. Your academic career should include English, composition and other liberal arts courses that develop communication skills.
