"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do
everything, but I can do something; and what I should
do and can do, I will do."
anonymous
The AWRA headquarters office has recently acted
locally to encourage the use of environmentally
friendly, re-usable, durable, cloth grocery bags by
providing funds to sponsor the effort in our tiny
hometown of Middleburg, VA.
AWRA staff were also spotted on a recent early
Saturday morning cleaning the local streambed that
runs through Middleburg. A dump truck full of tree
limbs, construction materials, and trash of all sorts
was cleared out in the course of the morning's
work.
Before our efforts filled a dump truck.
As the staff of the American Water Resources
Association, we are mostly involved with keeping
water resources professionals connected to important
information, events, and each other "to advance
multidisciplinary water resources education,
management and research." We rarely have the
opportunity to roll up our sleeves, get our hands dirty
and do some heavy lifting out in the field.
In the end, it gives us a greater appreciation for the
work you all do everyday in your research, in the
outreach and educational activities, and in the
practical solutions to water resources challenges that
you design, install, repair everyday.

The AWRA 43rd Annual Water Resources Conference
is returning to the Southwest and Albuquerque, where
water seems perpetually in short supply. Since the
conference last visited the Southwest desert region in
2001, water has become even more of an issue as
the region grapples with growth, drought, Endangered
Species Act issues, water marketing, water quality,
and the specter of global warming; much is
happening in response to these issues.
The AWRA 43rd Annual Water Resources Conference
is a forum for all participants of our water resources
community, provides opportunities for
conversation
about the many multidisciplinary aspects of water
resources, and make connections that
will improve
how we understand the complex water issues that are
of importance to this region, the nation, and the world.
To encourage this exchange, the conference will
include oral and poster sessions, plenary panels,
field trips, and networking events. A number of student
participation activities are also planned. We are
especially interested in how your work has involved
the collaborative process between agencies or private
entities and how collaboration served in meeting
project goals and improving the water
environment.
In addition to the broad array of topics on which we
always encourage submission for the annual
conference, we welcome individuals who wish to
propose panel discussions or special sessions on
themed tracks consisting of a core of invited
presentations.
If you are interested in organizing a
special session, please contact the Technical Chair,
Karl Williard to
discuss details.

JAWRA Associate Editors Needed |
 |
AWRA is grateful to the Associate Editors who agreed
to extend their terms as the Journal of the
American Water Resources Association
embarked on a transition of editorship last year. Now,
three of our long-serving editors are moving on, and
we thank them for their outstanding service and
contributions to JAWRA:
Walter Lyon (Water Policy & Planning)
Ron Griffin (Water Resource Economics)
Darryl Davis (Surface Water Hydrology)
Associate Editors are the foundation of a
multidisciplinary journal, as no single person can
provide a critical eye in all fields. They select
reviewers and make publishing recommendations.
The volunteer job is challenging but rewarding,
moreso as JAWRA's visibility
increases. Read more information about the
Associate Editor's duties here.
If you are interested in serving as an Associate Editor
for the Journal of the American Water
Resources Association, please email your CV
to the editor by
May 1, 2007.

The Natural Resources and Infrastructure Division of
the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin
American and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has release a
study entitled, "Determinants of the Performance
of Public Water Services in Chile, 1977-1999" by
Johanna Sjodin of Vaxjo University in Sweden. The
objective of the study is to examine the recent history
of Chilean urban drinking water supply and sanitation
services. The study was completed as part of the
ECLAC's internship program for selected graduate
students. Information about the internship program
can be found here.
Prince Sultan Bin
Abdulaziz International Prize for Water
A new "Creativity Prize," worth $266,000 has been
added to the awards available to researchers in the
Water Resources sector of the Prince Sultan Bin
Abdulaziz International Prize for Water 2006-2008.
The prize will be awarded to any original work of
research, invention, technique, etc., which is
considered a break-through in any water-related field.
The work must be practically applicable, economically
feasible, and environmentally friendly. In addition, four
additional prizes are available for the best in four
water resources topics:
Surface Water: Sedimentation Control in Surface
Water Systems
Ground Water: Exploration and Assessment of
Ground Water
Alternative (non-traditional) Water Resources:
Innovative Methods and Systems in Desalination
Water Resources Management and Protection:
Water Demand Management in Urban Areas
The prize for each of these topic areas is
approximately $133,000. The prizes are intended to
reward the efforts undertaken by innovative scholars
and scientists in the realm of water resources
worldwide. Information and applications can be found
at the link. Applications are due at the end of
December 2007.
USGS Releases Report Outlining Goals and
Priorities for the Future
In order to respond to evolving national priorities, the
US Geological Survey must periodically reflect on and
optimize its strategic directions. This report (available
at the link) is the first comprehensive science strategy
since the early 1990s to critically examine our major
science goals and priorities. The development of this
science strategy comes at a time of global trends that
have important natural-science implications. The
emergence of a global economy affects the demand
for all resources. In turn, use of these natural
resources is occurring on a scale that may modify the
terrestrial, marine, and atmospheric environments
upon which human civilization depends. The use of
and competition for natural resources on the global
scale, and natural threats to those resources, has the
potential to impact the Nation's ability to sustain its
economy, national security, quality of life, and natural
environment.
