"A
river seems a magic thing. A magic, moving, living part
of the very earth
itself."
- Laura Gilpin
Final
plans have been laid for the upcoming AWRA Summer
Specialty Conference Riparian Ecosystems &
Buffers: Working at the Water's
Edge. Several unique
events and activities have been organized, including a
very special, low cost pre-conference field trip, a
carbon off-setting activity that all the
conference registrants can participate in,
lunches provided each day of the conference (thanks
to our generous sponsors!), and a special showing
of "RiverWebs,"
a film we heard about in response to my February
column introducing the WaterDance Film
Festival (a festival
that takes place in your living room at times
of your own choosing)!
Of
course, there's also the keynotes, concurrent sessions,
and posters, too. If you haven't yet made your
plans to go to Virginia Beach at the
end of June for this outstanding conference, read more
about it below and register today! Earlybird deadline is
June 9, 2008.
Speaking
of WaterDance,
I continue to receive suggestions for more water-themed
movies. This month, I'm recommending a movie I
haven't yet seen, but hope to ... The
Water Front. It's a
documentary about the community of Highland Park,
MI, where
the people who live next to the largest body of fresh
water can no longer afford to use it. It's been
featured at a number of environmental film festivals,
and I'm intrigued. If anyone has seen it, I'd love to hear
what you think.

water resources research, education, and management and,
thus, is a forum for all participants in the
water resources community. The Prorgam Committee is
meeting this week to finalize the program.
Presentations on all topics related to water
resources will be on the program. In addition, the
program will include panel discussions and special
sessions that consist of linked presentations on a
particular topic.
The
Conference will include:
- oral
and poster sessions
- plenary
speakers
- panels
- pre-conference
field trips and short courses
- networking
events
- student
activities
Attendees
will enjoy opportunities for conversations about the
many multidisciplinary aspects of water resources, and
to make connections that will improve their
understanding of the complex water issues of importance
not only to the southeastern United
States but also to the

Occupational Information Network
Program
(O*NET)
The
US Department of Labor is updating their Occupational
Information Network Program (O*NET), which lists
information on occupations and tasks performed by
them. They are currently looking at updating the
O*NET listing for Hydrologist, and are asking for AWRA's
help in identifying occupational experts for the
position of "hydorologist"(defined as those with 5 or
more years of expereicne in the profession). Experts
will be asked to complete an O*NET questionnaire, and to
provide information on the position of
hydrologist. If you're interested, click on the
link and send a message to Dick
Engberg.
The
American Society of Civil Engineers honored
AWRA's Past

Science
Without
Borders
Science
Without Borders creates, facilitates and supports
cooperation between scientists, researchers and other
stakeholders of the academic sphere of the African and
the European region. Launched in 2007 as an
initiative of organizations involved in
science-based cooperation between the two regions, it
focuses on small-scale, short-term cooperative efforts
that provide quick wins for those who are usually not
reached through big framework
initiatives.

PhD Scholarships in
Water Law
Completed
Applications due June 20,
2008
Applications
are invited for up to four fully funded PhD Studentships
in Water Law within the Dundee UNESCO HELP Centre for
Water Law, Policy and Science, part of the Graduate
School of Management and Policy (College of Arts &
Social Sciences). This interdisciplinary research centre
is the only UNESCO Centre in the UK and the
first of its kind in the world. The core mission of the
UNESCO Centre is to develop a new generation of local
water leaders, primarily through research excellence and
its innovative "Water Law, Water Leaders" graduate
programme. The UNESCO Centre has established a series of
research clusters in the areas of water law, policy and
science. In the specific area of water law we have
developed three separate but inter-connected research
theme groupings: (i) international water law (public
international law); (ii) comparative national water law,
and (iii) regulation of water services law. At
least one studentship / research associate post will be
offered within each of these clusters, with the fourth
likely to fall within the area of public international
water law. Initial inquiries can be made at
the link above.
