SESSION 3: Panel: Riparian Forest Buffer Implementation and Management ~ Recommendations from the Mid-Atlantic States

More than 90% of the riparian plantings in the Chesapeake Bay watershed have been implemented with federal cost share program funds. Assessment of these projects indicates that there are issues causing success to be somewhat difficult. Agencies, organizations, and scientists have summarized findings and developed practices that increase the opportunity for successful riparian forest buffer restoration projects. This panel will explore some of the known issues and solutions, and present ideas that have worked in specific situations and are applicable in most instances.

SESSION 33: Panel: Emerging Issues in Riparian Management

The fields of riparian ecosystem science and function and the proliferation of programs and initiatives using riparian systems as stream/shoreline buffers for water quality improvement practices have demonstrated the need for continued learning and adaptive management. In addition, water quality problems in many regions remain complex and persistent. While proven conservation approaches still remain valid, many questions remain unanswered and new challenges such as climate change, sea level rise, bio-energy, water quality trading, and invasive pests point out the need for creativity in developing solutions. How should scientists, resource professionals, and government managers respond?

"The 2008 conference focus on emerging science, the structure, function and management of riparian ecosystems from many perspectives also has an emphasis on the use of new technology for prioritization, targeting, measuring, and monitoring the effectiveness of riparian ecosystems. This panel discussion will feature presentations on living shorelines as coastal buffers and the concept of ecosystem markets and their role in riparian protection and restoration followed by an open discussion with conference participants on emerging topics raised at the conference. The Panel will compile a list of persistent and emerging issues that can be used to guide future research and potentially stimulate policy and program development.
