Water Issues and Concern: A New Series Tailors Information to Meet Individual Needs

Poster Session Abstract:

Water quality plays a significant role in the daily activities of the citizenry around the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Water is used for both domestic and industrial supplies as well as being an attraction for recreation and tourism.

At times, these uses may conflict, in particular domestic and industrial and result in poor water quality. The new Water Issues and Concerns fact sheet series provides information on a variety of water quality topics that will help policy makers, regulators, journalists, educators, and concerned citizens understand the issues pertaining to daily water consumption and water based activities. The series address a wide array of topics pertaining to water quality, from direct water quality concerns such as taste and odor to indirect contaminant issues related to fish consumption advisories.

The detail in the papers range from general overviews describing the topic, to detailed papers relaying the latest scientific findings. The series is available in a notebook format to which future fact sheets will be added as they are developed or the fact sheets are available as singly. The notebook will be distributed to a varied audience ranging from municipal officials to natural resource professionals. Besides being in hard print, the series can also be found on the internet at http://ag.ansc.purdue.edu/il-in-sg. By placing the series on the internet, the reader is provided with interactive links to more in-depth information.
