Southern Lake Michigan Environmental Education Resource Web Site

Poster Session Abstract

One of the biggest challenges for teachers in the southern Lake Michigan region is finding environmental education resource materials that will help students effectively study the Lake Michigan shoreline. An Internet-based compendium of such educational resources would greatly assist teachers in meeting this major challenge. The design of the compendium brings two other challenges. The first is to present the compendium in such a way that the materials are easily accessible to teachers and students as they search for resources focused on the learning task at their grade level. The second is the production of an announcement and guide that helps the teacher easily find and use the compendium site.

The compendium web page is designed to help teachers locate curriculum material found on the net as well as off the net. The web site can be accessed at http://seagrant.calumet.purdue.edu/. There are several options available to sort and view the database. One may search by grade level, by free text search that uses the subject of interest, or by other information (data, maps, servers, and text). The previous and next buttons at the top and bottom of every page in the database will help the teacher navigate through the lists of information.
