Charles River Watershed Association - Volunteers Needed!

Protecting the river's health, beauty, and accessibility

What Is CRWA?

One of the country's first watershed organizations, Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) was formed in 1965 in response to public concern about the declining condition of the Charles.

Since its earliest days of advocacy, CRWA has figured prominently in major clean-up and watershed protection efforts, working with government officials and citizen groups from 35 watershed towns from Hopkinton to Boston.

Initiatives over the last three decades have dramatically improved the quality of water in the watershed and approaches to water resource management.

CRWA works to:

  • Develop a sound, science- based understanding of interactions in the watershed;
  • Define long-term solutions to watershed problems; and
  • Promote cutting-edge solutions to watershed problems with government agencies and private entities.

CRWA needs volunteer assistance in these areas:

Library/Archives
Archivist needed to organize and catalogue CRWA's library and photo/slide collection. Library experience would be useful. This work needs to be done at CRWA's office during weekday hours.

Water Monitoring
Water quality samplers are needed for CRWA's IM3 monthly water monitoring program. Samples are taken in the early morning, typically the third Tuesday of each month. CRWA will provide training.

Administrative Support

Clerical assistance needed approximately 4 to 8 hours a week for processing membership ackowledgements and mailings, filing, data entry, etc.

Education

Volunteer with classroom experience needed to make presentations to school groups about the Charles River. Creativity required to design and execute a flexible presentation for a variety of grade levels.

Run of the Charles

Many hands are needed to help with CRWA's annual canoe and kayak race the last weekend in April. Pitch in prior to the event or at points along the river on race day.

River Clean-up
Coordinator is needed to work with groups of volunteers who periodically contact CRWA about participating in river clean-up projects. Willingness to work some weekend hours would be helpful.

Laboratory and Field Science

Student needed approximately 4 to 8 hours a week to test water quality, measure river flow, conduct laboratory analysis, prepare spreadsheets, set up supplies, etc. Basic science or engineering background required.
