Description
Several of the littoral states of the Caspian face a severe water crisis and have turned to desalination of the Caspian sea as a potential solution. While desalination may address a pressing need, it will also cause potentially severe impacts to the sea's ecology including its salinity and water level. Desalination occurs in the context of a pre-existing pattern of water loss. This webinar discusses potential policies that could be adopted to mitigate the impact of the looming threat of desalination on the sea's long-term survival.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the ecological threats currently faced by the Caspian.
- Evaluate existing and proposed efforts to mitigate damage.
- Understand the geopolitical context and its role in governance solutions.
