Rosario Sanchez is the leader of the Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program for the state of Texas, that integrates research and data on transboundary aquifers between Mexico and the United States. She leads the transboundary groundwater research team with 15 years of academic and work experience on transboundary issues between Mexico and the United States. She is the founder and Director of the Permanent Forum of Binational Waters Co-Chair of the Transboundary Aquifers Commission of IAH.
Description
The combined results of Sanchez et al. (2016), Sanchez et al. (2018), and Sanchez & Rodriguez (2021), are used in this presentation as a compilation of findings to offer a sole reference of transboundary aquifers to the overall border between Mexico and the U.S. The first section will cover main findings in terms of the number of HGUs (hydrogeological units), aquifer potential and water quality, and proportions of shared land overall the border region and by state. The second part will present an updated list of transboundary aquifers that has the purpose to substitute the one published by Sanchez et al. (2016) and the final map that will also be the updated version of that published in 2016. The last section will address what the implications are in terms of current management conditions, and of course, binational water security concerns.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the transboundary aquifers along the U.S-Mexico Border
- Evaluate and compare regions across the border in terms of groundwater resources availability
- Recognize binational challenges related to water security
