2020 Spring Conference Field Trip

Field Trip: Waller Creek Tour | Sunday, March 22 | 1:00 - 3:00 PM - $25.00

LIMITED TO 25 ATTENDEES! Stretching from Waterloo Park to Lady Bird Lake, the Waller Creek Tunnel helps reduce the risk of flooding in downtown Austin. The 5,600-ft long tunnel lies 70-ft below ground and features a variable diameter between 22-ft and 27-ft. The tour promises to be both informative and interesting, but is restricted to the first 25 registrants. All participants will be required to wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothes are recommended.

Since the tunnel is below the level of Lady Bird Lake, it is constantly filled with 21.5 million gallons of water. Benefits of the tunnel include: a reduced flood risk to buildings and roads; revitalization of the Waller Creek District; reinvestment in parks and trails; improved water quality and wildlife habitat in and along Waller Creek; and provides a constant flow of water in the creek. The Waller Creek Tunnel is operated by the City of Austin's Watershed Protection Department.
