Why Participate?

In recognition of new, exciting technologies in geospatial analysis of water systems, our biennial conference has changed its name. The AWRA Geospatial Water Technology Conference starts its second decade of existence by continuing to embrace, but also moving beyond GIS in Water Resources. We welcome participants who work in a wide array of water technologies. The Special Theme of this Conference is Complex Systems. 

Centuries of experience in water resources management have taught us that water is a complex, multi-layered system that involves flows in the natural environment and built infrastructure. Components of this system include surface and groundwater, sewerage and drinking water systems, storm water flows and green infrastructure. We must embrace this complexity to manage water sustainably. Together we will explore complex systems related to water, including ecological webs, water and transportation networks, urban infrastructure, the water-energy nexus and water sustainability. Complexity manifests itself on multiple temporal, spatial and contextual scales, and ranges from ecosystem dynamics to nexus systems such as energy, food and water. We invite presentations on this wide spectrum of topics, as well as on analytical, simulation, and visualization tools that can be used for decision-making in such systems. 

The conference will also introduce a new approach to managing and sharing geospatial information related to water. The USGS, along with partners, is leading the design of the National Hydrography Infrastructure (NHI). The NHI is based on the NHDPlus High Resolution dataset framework, web-based Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and geoprocessing services for addressing data to the hydrographic network; as well as cataloging and network-based search and discovery of the addressed data. The NHI will support the development of connected tools, systems, and applications, including artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) solutions. It is collaborative, open, and valuable for a broad user group, including government, tribes, industry, and citizens, and will form the core spatial framework for the Internet of Water.

This is an opportunity to share your research and experiences with colleagues who are actively working in the fields of complexity and sustainability in the context of water. We particularly encourage students, postdoctoral associates and early career researchers to join us to learn about cutting edge technologies in the analysis of complex hydrologic systems, and to participate in a variety of specially planned activities.
