Tour of Lake Apopka Filter Marsh and Restoration Project

Sunday, Nov. 13
1:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Cost: $40 per person

Join us for a tour of the Lake Apopka Filter Marsh and Restoration Project, located 20 miles northwest of downtown Orlando. Lake Apopka - Florida's fourth largest lake - was once a world-class bass fishery. However, impacts to the lake over many decades led the lake to be named Florida's most polluted large lake. In recent years, the St. Johns River Water Management District and its partners have been working to improve lake water quality and restore wetlands and wildlife habitat north of the lake.

The Lake Apopka North Shore Restoration project has converted approximately 20,000 acres of former agricultural land into floodplain marsh and wetlands - similar to how the area looked prior to conversion to farmland in the early-to-mid 1900s. Major activities to date include land acquisition, marsh and floodplain restoration, pesticide remediation and exposure management, creation of a constructed wetland to filter Lake Apopka water, and constructing the infrastructure necessary to support public recreation.

This tour highlights the work of the St. Johns River Water Management District and its partners, with information provided by knowledgeable project team members. The tour is being planned to include the following:

  • A presentation on the history of the Lake Apopka Filter Marsh and Restoration project
  • A tour of the wildlife drive - bird diversity in this area is extraordinary; other wildlife include alligators, turtles, otters, bobcats and coyote
  • A visit to the Apopka Marsh Flow-way - an 800-acre treatment wetland that removes suspended solids and plankton from lake water and returns the filtered water to the lake

Buses will depart from the Florida Hotel and Conference Center at 1:00 PM and return by 5:30 PM.

Cost: $40 per person
