Water Resources Resilience in the United States

Moderator: David T. McGimpsey
Bingham Greenebaum Doll, Jasper, Indiana

In 2016, the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) completed a survey on the "Top 10 Water Issues for America's Leaders." The following list provides a summary of the top five issues derived from the survey:

  1. Aging Infrastructure
  2. Climate Change
  3. Water and Energy Nexus
  4. Flood and Drought
  5. Governance

From the list, it can be appreciated that Resiliency, which may be defined as a system's capacity to absorb or manage adverse situations such as emergencies, is a common denominator amongst these issues. The Conference Planning Committee for AWRA's 2016 Annual Conference will kick?off the conference with a Plenary Session that will focus on the comprehensive topic of "Water Resources Resiliency in the U.S." to facilitate a detailed discussion on these top five issues and their relationship with resiliency.

The session will be moderated by the creator of "The Water Values" podcast, David T. McGimpsey. Mr. McGimpsey , an attorney with Bingham Greenebaum Doll in Jasper, Indiana, also hosts "The Water Values" podcast, which is released twice a month. On the podcast Mr. McGimpsey interviews prominent and interesting individuals in the water resources industry. He captures the perspective of thought leaders and connects that perspective to the value of water. It will be recorded as a futureWater Values podcast, to be aired to a worldwide audience. Additional information on the "The Water Values" can be accessed through the following link: http://thewatervalues.com/

Four Thought Leaders from the water resources Industry will participate in the Plenary panel:

  1. Aging Infrastructure - Lester Sola, Director of Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD), Miami, FL and Hardeep Anand, Deputy Director for Capital Improvements Program, WASD, Miami, FL
  2. Water and Energy Nexus - Cindy Wallis-Lage, President of Black & Veatch's Water Business, Kansas City, MO
  3. Governance - Shawn Grindstaff, Senior Dispute Resolution Counsel for USEPA, Lenexa, KS

Resiliency would first be discussed amongst each Thought Leader to define it's meaning within the water resources industry and set the tone for each panel member to contribute on their respective area of expertise.

Thank you for your participation, support of AWRA and your leadership in water resources management. We look forward to having you join us as we kick off our 2016 Annual Conference with this remarkable Opening Plenary Session!
