2022 Spring Conference Field Trip

IMPORTANT: In order to receive important communication from the AWRA Team about your conference participation, you must add [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected] to your safe sender list.

To join this field trip, please add it to your conference registration.

NOTICE:

AWRA will continue to hold this conference in-person as planned with strict safety and health protocols in place to continue our commitment to keep conference participates and AWRA safe. We cannot confirm there will be a hybrid component to this conference at this time. When submitting a Call for Topical Sessions and Workshops, please submit these knowing you are making a commitment to be in-person. If circumstances change in the local area (i.e. similar to the overwhelming spread of COVID-19 in Orlando and the health crisis that followed), the AWRA Board of Directors will assess the situation as it unfolds and may choose to make different choices at this time.

In the world we live in today, there is an inherent and permanent risk of being exposed to COVID-19 in your daily life. Trips to the grocery store, getting gas, picking up your children from school, and seeing family and friends are among the risks we take daily to live a normal and productive life. AWRA seeks to normalize how the AWRA community can gather in-person to fulfill our mission of community, conversation, and connection in the water resources community. Our safe and healthy protocols in place are the best practices of in-person gatherings today. The restrictions that are in place are the current standards, and protocols may change closer to the conference date. UPDATED: January 10, 2022

Field Trip 1: Tour of The National Water Center
Sunday, April 24 | 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM CT
$20/person | Registration limits = 50 attendees

The field trip will be limited to 50 people. The bus will meet you starting at 3:30 PM in the front of the Hotel Capstone. The bus will leave promptly at 3:45 PM and return at 5:45 PM CT.

Masks are required to be worn during this field trip. Bring your own mask as they will not be provided by the center.

The National Water Center (NWC) is the cornerstone facility of the Office of Water Prediction within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service. Designed and built on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the facility opened on May 26, 2015, receiving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

The mission of the NWC is to promote collaboration across the scientific community, serving as both a catalyst to accelerate the transition of research into operations and a center of excellence for water resources science, information, and prediction services. These services inform essential emergency management and water resources decisions across all time scales, including drought, low-flow risks, and information needs for routine and long-range water management and planning.

At the AWRA 2022 Spring Conference, the NWC looks forward to hosting the AWRA community for a tour of our facility. On this field trip, you can expect to learn more about the NWC’s programs and projects focused on transforming our Nation’s water prediction information and services. The tour will highlight the NWC’s current and future activities, including:

  • The National Water Model
  • The Next Generation Water Resources Modeling Framework
  • NOAA’s Hydrologic Evaluation Service
  • Coastal Coupling Community of Practice
  • Flood Inundation Mapping Services
  • National Water Center Operations
  • Opportunities for Collaboration
